One of the more exciting parts of going off to college is moving into your own dorm room. You will get to meet new people, make new friends, make new memories, and live on your own. However, dorm rooms are generally small, and you will have to share the dorm room with at least one other person. With that being said, you will have to decide what to take with you and what to put into self-storage. Here are a few items that you should leave in storage.

Bulky Furniture

While you may not think you can live without your bed from home or sit in any other computer chair, your dorm room may not be big enough for these larger pieces of furniture. So, rather than trying to make them fit into the space, keep the bulky furniture like beds, armchairs, desks, and ottomans in a self-storage unit. Instead, opt for your bean bag chair and wall mirror.

Unused Textbooks

Old textbooks can sometimes come in handy. For instance, if you are majoring in art history, the reference book that you used during your first semester may be useful at some point in time. However, if the book is not useful for a current course, it will only take up space and collect dust on a shelf. You can hold onto unused, useful textbooks by storing them in a self-storage unit until they're needed again. Make sure that their spines remain straight when you stack them and use boxes or plastic bins that are covered to protect the books from damage.

Seasonal Clothing and Décor

While it may be fun to add seasonal décor to the dorm, it can take up more room than you realize. You should consider keeping all of your seasonal décor in a self-storage unit and come up with creative ways to show your holiday spirit that won't take up a lot of room. For instance, you can create a dorm room that feels festive and cozy with strands of Christmas lights and window clings without overcrowding the space. You should also store your seasonal clothing like winter coats and boots in the unit during the warmer months to save valuable storage space in the dorm.

When you move into the dorm room and find it difficult to fit everything inside, you should consider investing in a self-storage space for some of the aforementioned items as well as items that aren't as necessary.
